What this service covers

Keep the tree. Fix the problem.

A lot of trees don't need to come down — they need the right cuts. Limbs scraping shingles, branches hanging low over the driveway, dead wood waiting to fall on the car, or a canopy so thick the grass won't grow underneath.

Good pruning removes specific branches at the right spot so the tree seals the wound and keeps its natural shape. We trim for clearance over roofs, drives and walkways, take out dead and broken limbs, thin crowded crowns to let light and wind through, and shape young trees so they grow strong.

What we won't do is top your tree. Chopping the whole crown back leaves weak regrowth and decay — it creates the hazard you were trying to prevent.

How we prune.

  1. 01

    Look up first

We walk the tree with you and agree on exactly which limbs go.

  2. 02

    Pick the cuts

Each cut is placed at a branch collar or side branch, never a stub.

  3. 03

    Climb or lift

Work is done by climbing or from the bucket truck, depending on access.

  4. 04

    Chip and clean

Brush chipped, lawn raked, and the canopy checked from the ground.

Why topping hurts trees.

And what we do instead, plus the best time to prune in East Tennessee.

Topping starves the tree

Removing most of the crown cuts off the leaves that feed the tree. It panics and pushes out fast, weak shoots.

Weak regrowth breaks

Those new shoots attach loosely. A few years later they're heavy, crowded and snap in storms.

Big stubs rot

Cutting in the middle of a limb leaves wounds the tree can't close. Decay moves in.

Reduction, done right

When size needs to come down, we cut back to a healthy side branch so the tree keeps its structure.

Best season

Late winter, when trees are dormant, is ideal for most structural pruning in the Knoxville area.

Anytime work

Dead, broken or dangerous limbs can come out any time of year. Don't wait for winter on those.

Tree Trimming & Pruning questions, answered.

When is the best time to trim trees in Knoxville?
Late winter, while trees are dormant, is best for most structural pruning. Dead, broken or hazardous limbs can and should be removed any time of year.
Do you top trees?
No. Topping creates weak regrowth and decay that makes trees more dangerous over time. We use proper reduction cuts instead.
How much does tree trimming cost?
It depends on the tree's size, how many limbs need work, and access. We give free estimates after looking at the tree with you.
How often should trees be pruned?
Many mature trees do well with a check every few years. Young trees benefit from shaping earlier and more often while they're setting their structure.
Can you trim branches over my roof without damaging it?
Yes. Limbs over roofs are cut in smaller pieces and lowered or controlled so they don't drop onto shingles or gutters.
Will trimming make my tree healthier?
Removing dead, diseased and crossing branches helps the tree put energy into healthy growth and lowers the chance of storm breakage.
